Homework tonight: w/s: How is density measured? and Density Practice problems found at
http://mrlucas.com/Page%20Files/Density%20Practice%2001%20%28DR%29.pdf
Announcements:
A. Unit Test planned for Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014
B. Study Hall starts up on Monday, Jan. 6.
Study Hall Advantages:
1. Quiet place where students focus on studying, or doing homework without distractions.
2. You can study or do homework for any of your classes, not just science.
3. You can get help if you get stuck.
4. Get a snack and drink.
5. You can leave your homework in your locker and have it ready for the next day.
6. Extra credit in science class if you work on science.
7. Tips on the science Unit test (could help you improve your grade!)
8. Future study halls will give you training in study skills and test-taking skills.
9. Take the late bus home after 1 hour of work.
Disadvantages:
1. You have to tell your parent and get their ok - permission slips will be handed out there.
2. You have to make a choice and stick with it.
Trade off: weigh the advantages against the disadvantages and make your choice.
Here are the notes and vocab definitions from today's class. If you missed class, or did not finish writing them in class, write them in your science notebook:
Date: Jan. 2, 2014 AOI: Health & Social Educ. IBPC: Inquirers
Topic:
Identifying Solids
Objective - TSW:
·
Identify solids by their chemical and physical
properties;
·
measure
mass & calculate density to identify the metal in 6 objects.
Vocab: Change,
Chemical change, chemical reaction, conductive, physical change, precipitate, reactivity,
relative density.
Vocab – write them on the correct page in
your vocab section
Change - difference in
observable properties.
Chemical Change - if the bonds
between atoms or molecules and their arrangement become different than they
were, causing formation of a substance with new form, properties, and identity.
Results from a chemical reaction. Ex: iron rusting, metal dissolved by acid,
wood burning, or egg that is hard-boiled.
Chemical reaction - process in which
substance(s) change into a different substance with different properties. Signs
of a chemical reaction include change in color or energy (temperature or
light); or formation of bubbles, gas, or a precipitate.
conductive
- how well a substance supports the flow of heat or electricity.
Physical change - change in which
the properties and identity of the
substance does NOT change.
Precipitate - a solid that falls out
of some chemical reactions. For illustration, google the term : Precipitate
Reactivity - ability (or probability)
of a substance to react chemically with another substance; this property, like
density or conductivity, results from how the material is put together at the
atomic level. Ex: tin reacts with acid or copper chloride, but pine wood
doesn't.
Relative density - qualitative (not
quantitative) comparison of the density of a substance to another substance,
usually water. Ex: molasses will sink in water because it's more dense than
water.
