Tuesday homework:

Periods 1, 2, 6 and 7:  For homework, write 5 STAR Note Questions (5*NQs) in the skinny column next to today's notes.  Remember, STAR Note Questions must start with one of the 5 "W" words (Who, What, When, Where, Why or How), capitalized; and all questions must end with a Question mark (?).

Periods 4 - Science Class Safety Rules - Read with parent or guardian, fill them out and sign where it asks you to sign. Have your parent or guardian fill and sign where indicated.

 All students: if you did not finish notes in class, then finish them now.  Here are today's notes:

Date: Oct. 19, 2016
Topic: Heating Earth’s Surface
Obj: TSW:  design an experiment to measure which surfaces (land or water) heat up more quickly.
Task: Write out a Hypothesis, Procedures and draw a Data Table for this lab.

Notes on how Experiments are planned:

1.Problem –  must be written in the form of a question.  Ex: How can you solve global warming? Why do people always grow up?

2.Hypothesis – “testable prediction”. “IF…….., then…….”

3.Procedure –like a recipe for experiment.Write out steps: explain how you’ll use materials and equipment, how you’ll measure ingredients. ** How to write procedures:
        1) Number each step.

        2) Limit to one step per number.

        3) To make your procedures Reproducible, be specific.

a.Name the equipment you’ll use (no pronouns);

b.Plan how much to measure of all materials and time.

c.Explain how you’ll use the equipment.

d.Explain what materials you will use the equipment on;
       4) Write in a way that is easy to understand: short and simple.

4.Collect Data – Run experiment and record your data at every step.

5.Data Analysis – Fill in data tables, make graphs, find mean + median + mode.

6.Conclusions – Was your hypothesis correct? Why or why not? Follow up on experiment: improve it, re-do it while avoiding errors, or answer other questions.
