Date: Jan. 9, 2017 USE STAR NOTES
Topic: Measuring Volume
Obj: TSW:
  • use two methods, measurement and calculation, and water displacement to determine the volume of various objects.
  • Do the BIG INCH
  • 1.  The basic measurement unit of length in the Customary System is the Inch
    a. Measurement - Every measurement has two parts: number (quantity) and unit.
    • A number is a quantity, a multiplier for a unit.
    • A unit is an amount, always the same size, that countries and groups have agreed to use.
    b. (length=distance between 2 points)
    c. There are 2 main systems of units: Customary and Metric (S.I.)
    • Customary units include: inch, foot, yard, mile; cups, pint, quart, gallon
      Length: 12 inches = 1 foot; 3 feet = 1 yard; 5,280 ft = 1 mile
      1 quart = 2 pints; 1 pint =2 cups; 1 cup = 8 ounces;
      1 gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups = 128 ounces;
      Problem with customary system: conversions between different units are based on different numbers.
      Ex: 1 ft. =12 in. 1 yd. = 3 ft. = 36 in. 1 mile = 5,280 ft.
    • Metric Units of length: cm, m, km.
                m = Meter, basic metric unit of length.
               Magic number: 10. Conversions from one unit to another are all multiples of 10. Ex:
  • 1 km = 1,000 m
  • 1 meter (m) = 100 centimeter (cm);
  • 1 cm = 10 millimeter

IN THE METRIC SYSTEM, WE USE DECIMALS FOR PARTIAL UNITS, NOT FRACTIONS.

Tomorrow:  Volume

Vocab: (write vocab words in notes, words + definitions in vocab section)r
quantitative- data with numbers. Ex: length, volume,etc.
qualitative - observations or data without numbers. Ex: color, texture, hardness.
