Topic: Identifying Liquids
Obj: TSW: Identify liquids by their chemical and physical properties.
Strand (the Big Idea): Materials can be classified as pure substances or mixtures, depending on their chemical and physical properties.
Vocab:( words in notes, words + definitions in vocab section)
- Appearance - how does it look? Use facts that others can also observe. Ex: color, state, transparency, thickness, texture, etc.
- Liquid: state of matter with a definite volume but no definite shape.
- Miscible - does it mix or not when you put it into another substance (ex: water, oil, ethanol).
- Properties: the nature of a material, ex: physical properties of color, hardness, state, density, and conductivity, or chemical properties, such as flammability or reactivity with acid. Properties are how we determine what material we are looking at, and how we use that material.
- A solid has definite volume and shape, and
- a gas has neither definite volume nor definite shape.
