Topic: Diluting the Problem
Key words (define in vocab section): In chemistry:
1.        Solution : one substance is evenly dissolved in another.
2.        Solvent is the substance that does the dissolving. Ex: gasoline, alcohol, water. Water dissolves more solutes than almost anything else, so water is called the "Universal Solvent".
3.        Solute - substance that gets dissolved.
4.        Concentration: a measure of how much solute is dissolved in a solution.
5.        Concentrated: means a solution with lots of solute compared with the amount of solvent in the solution.
6.        Diluted: a watered-down solution (not much solute with lots of solvent).
7.        Parts per million - a way to measure the concentration of a substance. Ex: 1 ppm = 1/1,000,000. See demo.
8.        Serial Dilution - Process of diluting a substance through a series of steps in which you add large amounts of water at each step.
Essential Question: What do you do with chemical wastes? Choices: 1. Dilute it (add lots of water); 2. React it with other chemicals; 3. Incinerate it (Burn it); 4. Reclaim it:
a. (put other metals in its place), or
b. make it precipitate (solidify and sink) out of solution.
