Homework for tonight: Students are to write the first half of their Separating the Mixture Lab Report, including:
  • Title;
  • Problem;
  • Hypothesis (all students but period 1 should have this already written in their science notebook);
  • Variables - You can leave this blank OR (your option if you're ready) can write to identify the Independent variable (choice) and Dependent Variable (what you measured or accomplished at the end);
  •  Materials
  • Procedures
Parts of Lab Report  and Lab Report format that you saw in class will be published on this blog in a few minutes, so check back if you're looking for it.

Note to Eli: We'd like you to start in the Robotics Club on Tuesday. Take home the permission slip taped on the counter near your desk and get it signed by your parent.  Bring it back to me on Tuesday. Mr. G

LAB REPORT –
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN

Title

PROBLEM QUESTION
What are you investigating?
VARIABLES
INDEPENDENT (What did the scientist change?)

DEPENDENT (What changed because of what the scientist changed)

Hypothesis
What do you think is the answer to the question?

If ________________________________

then ________________________________
MATERIALS
 List everything you use in this experiment

Procedure
What did you do?

Observations
What did you see?
This can include diagrams

DATA TABLE
Written, table, or graph

CONCLUSIONS

1.       Summarize your experiment.
2.       Was your hypothesis correct? Why or why not?
3.       What did your data show?
4.       What Errors did you make?
5.       If you were going to  this lab with another, how would you:
a)      improve this lab or
b)      further explore the problem  investigated in this lab?

Note: Each person must respond to each of the points shown above in bold.

Parts of a Lab Report:

1. Problem - What are you studying? What are you hoping to figure out? Must be written as a question.
2. Hypothesis - testable prediction. Must start with the word "If", and must include the word "then..." in the middle.
2. a. Variables: in science, means anything that can affect the outcome of the experiment.
i. Independent variable - the thing that you change or manipulate.
ii. dependent variable - the thing that you do or measure at the end.
3. Materials - list of all the materials you used
4. Procedures - Step-by-step instructions describing how you conducted your experiment.  Procedures should be numbered, written clearly
5. Data - All the data you collected. Data Table(s) Include both qualitative and quantitative data whenever possible.
6. Conclusion- A discussion of your results and what you found out, including:
A.   Restate your hypothesis;
B.   Compare your hypothesis with your results;
C.   Summarize your results (you must include data from your experiment)
D.   Describe variables that: you controlled & you were unable to control
F.   Discuss the validity of your results (how accurate are your results?;
G.    Suggest ways to reduce the errors in or to improve your experiment
H.    Suggest experiments for further study
Rubrics: IB D, E and F
