Dec. 12 homework - Write 5 STAR note Questions.

Dec. 11 homework - Reflection - Explain 3 differences between customary and Metric units of measurement, with examples.

Dec. 10, 2013 AOI: Health & Social Education / Inquirers USE STAR NOTES
Topic: Measuring Volume
Obj: TSW determine volume by using:
* measurement and calculation method; &
* water displacement method.
1. Getting Started -
a. Predict: How would you arrange items from least to greatest volume?
vocab: words go in notes; words + definitions go in vocab section.
Linear measurement - find distance on a straight line. Units include:
  • Customary : 12 inch = 1 foot; 1 yard = 3 feet = 36 inches; 1 mile = 5,280 ft.
  • Metric (SI): 1 meter (m) = 10 decimeter (dm) = 100 centimeter (cm);
  • 1 cm = 10 millimeter;
  • 1 km = 10 hectometers = 100 dkm = 1,000 m
volume - the amount of space that a material takes up, usually measured in:
  • cubic centimeters (cm3) - metric unit of measuring volume, usually of solids. One cm3 = a cube 1 cm x 1 cm x 1cm. 1 cm = 1 mL.
  • liter (L) - metric unit of measuring volume, usually of liquids or gases.
1 L = 1,000 mL and 1 L = 1.1 quarts.
